Shortly before the somber anniversary and a few hours before the NATO summit in Ankara, Member of the European Parliament Giorgos Georgiou, in a statement during the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, called on the international community to turn its attention to Cyprus.
“Cyprus. July 1974. A fascist coup and the Turkish invasion. The twin NATO crimes against my people. Fifty-two years later. You’re all gathering tomorrow, the NATO pack of wolves, in Ankara for your bloody schemes against the peoples. To coddle the perpetrator. To give gifts to Erdoğan. 52 years later.”
“The partition of Cyprus is just around the corner,” he warns.
“You owe us something: to use EU-Turkey relations to restart substantive negotiations. For a federal solution with political equality, as set forth in UN resolutions and the European acquis. I’m not sure you’ll do it. But if not, the EU and the international community will remain forever stigmatized.”
“The Cypriot people will never accept the partition of our homeland, nor a NATO-inspired solution,” he concluded.
