In the hope that significant progress will be made in the effort to resume talks aimed at resolving the Cyprus problem, the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, is departing for New York, where he will participate in the proceedings of the UN General Assembly and hold bilateral meetings.
Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letympiotis explained on the “Alpha Kalimera” program that, for the Greek Cypriot side, the main priority is to identify areas of common ground, while he did not hide his concern over the lack of political will on the part of Turkey. Furthermore, a response is expected from Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman to the “new ideas” presented to him by President Christodoulides during their meeting yesterday at the UNFICYP Good Offices Office.
At the same time, the Government Spokesperson noted that the President of the Republic is prepared to extend his stay in the U.S. metropolis or to return at any time, should a Trilateral or Extended Conference on the Cyprus issue be convened.
Meetings have already been scheduled between Christodoulides and the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on the Cyprus issue, María Ángela Olguín, as well as with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, on September 22 and 24, 2026.
