This heated summer isn’t just about the Cyprus issue; it’s also affecting party politics, against the backdrop of the 2028 presidential election.
Within DISY, discussions are in full swing, sparked by two developments.
First, Anita Dimitriou’s statement that the party will field its own candidate in the upcoming presidential election.
Second, the launch of a direct communication channel with citizens, opened by former President Averof Neophytou via WhatsApp.
On the occasion of DISY’s 50th anniversary, Haris Georgiadis shares his views in an article in the newspaper “O Fileleftheros,” he shares his views on how the party should proceed in the run-up to the major election campaign.
“DISY must further strengthen its European ties while simultaneously seeking honest political partnerships with political forces that are now very close to us, such as DIKO. And most importantly, it must avoid at all costs the trap of tactical maneuvering and personal agendas, which could jeopardize everything.”

In Pindarou, one could not help but take seriously Nikolaos Papadopoulos’s … grumbling toward the Presidency, as interpreted through continuous meetings and requests to redefine the relationship between the two sides.
In this regard, the meeting to be held in the coming days where, among other things, the upcoming cabinet reshuffle—scheduled for the end of the month—will be discussed.
Within DIKO, there are officials who have already begun to look askance to the right, with Energy Minister and party vice president Michalis Damianos rushing to send his own message in an interview with Kathimerini.
“DIKO has a candidate for 2028. If President Christodoulides decides to run again, then DIKO should support him.The governance program is being successfully implemented.”

At AKEL, discussions have not officially begun, although according to announcements by the leadership, this will not be long in coming.
As a guest on Sunday’s Alpha program with Iakovos Iakovou, Christos Christofias spoke of March 2027 regarding the selection of Ezekia Papaioannou, following discussions within the party as well as with the rank-and-file.
“Based on the plan we drafted and approved at the Central Committee’s plenary session last Saturday, June 27, the goal is to have a full year of campaigning for the presidential election. So, by February, or March 2027 at the latest, our candidate will begin campaigning.”

At EDEK, the lights were dimmed in the POED hall… to prevent physical altercations at the emergency convention.
It was a convention dominated by tension, sparked by the poor result in the parliamentary elections, which left the party out of Parliament for the first time in 56 years.
“Our greatest weakness, both as individuals and as a party, has been and remains introversion. It is—if I may use the term—an Edekian curse that we have carried for years. A habit that traps each of us in the ‘I’ rather than the ‘we.’”
Nikos Anastasiou – President of EDEK
Given these circumstances, there is no thought of running for president.
The convention decided to hold a constitutional convention first, followed by an electoral convention, this coming December.
