AKEL is sending the message that the Left is back on a path to growth following the results of the parliamentary elections on May 24, through the decisions of the party’s Central Committee. In a statement issued after Saturday’s meeting, AKEL refers to a significant political victory, assesses the new political landscape, and sets out its strategic priorities for the coming period.
The statement reads as follows:
The Strengthening and Rise of AKEL—The Left-Social Alliance in the recent parliamentary elections sent a strong message that the Left was, is, and will remain a leading force in our country. The 100-year history of the KKK-AKEL continues on an upward trajectory, becoming a future of hope and optimism. This is the key message from the AKEL Central Committee, which met on Saturday, June 27, 2026, to assess the results of the May 24 elections, outline the new political landscape, and define AKEL’s strategic priorities for the coming period. Following an introductory speech by the Party’s General Secretary, the Central Committee engaged in an in-depth discussion and approved the relevant document prepared by the Political Bureau. This dialogue will continue in the fall among the thousands of members and supporters of AKEL and the Social Alliance.
There is a universal consensus that the result of the parliamentary elections constitutes a significant electoral success and a pivotal political victory for the Left and the progressive movement in Cyprus. AKEL reversed the downward trend of previous years, increased its share of the vote and the number of votes cast, retained its seats, and saw a significant rise in support among the younger generation. AKEL also emerged politically strengthened from the process of electing the Speaker of the House and appointing the chairs of the parliamentary committees, because the Party rejected petty political horse-trading and demonstrated reliability, consistency in its principles, and self-confidence. We will continue on this path.
A key factor in our electoral success was—by general consensus——AKEL’s combative stance, both inside and outside Parliament, against the arbitrariness of the banks and the major economic interests that are plundering the country. our consistent and systematic work to address the suffocating economic pressure experienced by the vast majority of our society. AKEL’s electoral gains will, in practice, mean greater strength for society and for the major struggles that lie ahead: the struggle for decent wages and pensions, the expansion of collective bargaining agreements, the taxation of wealth and excess profits, tackling the housing crisis, restricting the sweeping up of real estate by foreign investors, and curbing inflation and energy poverty.
With regard to the new political landscape, beyond the realignments observed within the party structure, the bigger picture shows that a large number of our fellow citizens either abstained from voting, or are not registered on the voter rolls, while tens of thousands of others are not represented in Parliament because the parties they voted for failed to clear the electoral threshold. That is why AKEL’s efforts will continue to focus—not on the party system and its establishment—but on society, toward the vast majority of the people who feel disillusioned and resigned, who are waiting for solutions for today and hope for tomorrow. To this end, the Central Committee calls on all AKEL officials and members, and friends of the Social Alliance to intensify the Left’s presence across the board and at all levels within Cypriot society: in workplaces, in local communities, at universities, in social movements, and in the digital world. So that the message reaches everywhere—that there is hope and a future, and that it lies with the Left and its struggles.
At the same time, in light of the emerging momentum in the Cyprus issue, AKEL makes it clear that it will consistently stand by the position of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, to safeguard all the negotiating convergences and resume negotiations from the point where they were suspended in 2017. AKEL makes it clear to all parties that it will resist any attempts to dismantle the negotiating acquis or scenarios involving NATO’s involvement in the solution. AKEL is the force that has the influence, the knowledge, and the will to push developments toward a solution and reunification, and for this reason, it will launch new initiatives in the coming period to inform and mobilize the Cypriot people.
Finally, the Central Committee of AKEL reiterated that progressive change in the country’s governance by 2028 is our next strategic goal, and for this reason, sooner than ever, the necessary processes will be set in motion so that we are ready for the great battle. AKEL and the Left are the backbone and the main pillar of the country’s progressive movement and recognize their historic responsibility to do everything in their power to form thesocial majority that will bring about change. Cyprus and its people can no longer endure the government’s shifts between the right and the far right, the Anastasiades system and corruption, the lobbies of the banks and the establishment. Cyprus and its people deserve a new chapter of hope, and AKEL stands ready.
