The Famagusta branch of AKEL sent a letter to Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas on Friday, requesting a review of the location of the “Modestos Pantelis” in Liopetri.
“Our intervention is based on the legitimate concerns of the local community, as the military camp and storage facilities are located within the residential area and in the immediate vicinity of the 1st Elementary School of Liopetri and residential neighborhoods.”
In the letter, it requests an official briefing from the Ministry of Defense regarding the assessment studies, the safety measures being implemented, as well as whether the possibility of relocating the facilities outside a residential area is being considered.
The letter in its entirety:
“We wish to make it clear that our position is not directed against the National Guard, nor does it question its role in the country’s defense. On the contrary, we believe that the protection of human life—and especially the safety of children and residents—must be the highest priority.”
“We await the Ministry’s official response and will continue to monitor the issue responsibly and consistently,” AKEL concludes.
