On Wednesday, the Cabinet approved regulations governing the establishment and operation of Blood Safety and Transfusion Monitoring Committees in hospitals, with the aim of enhancing the safety and quality of blood transfusions.
According to a written statement by Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides, the regulations were approved under the Blood Donation Law of 1997.
As the Minister notes, the new regulations strengthen the monitoring of transfusion procedures, as well as the systematic recording, evaluation, and reporting of adverse reactions and events.
At the same time, he notes that the traceability of blood from donor to recipient is enhanced, while the implementation of uniform and best practices in hospitals is promoted.
According to Mr. Charalambides, the regulation is part of part of the broader effort to implement the National Blood Strategy and align Cyprus with the European framework for the quality and safety of substances of human origin (SoHO).
“Our priority is the continuous improvement of health services and ensuring high standards of quality and safety at every stage of the transfusion process, with the protection of patients as our primary concern,” the Minister of Health concluded.
