The goal is to provide more adequate and fairer pensions, with increases effective January 1, 2027

The pension reform bill is expected to be brought before the House of Representatives in the coming days, as stated on Thursday by Minister of Labor and Social Insurance Marinos Mousiouttas.

He noted that the goal is to provide more adequate and fairer pensions, with increases effective January 1, 2027, while the bill also provides, among other things, subsidized social security credits for mothers, people with disabilities, young people returning from their studies, and informal caregivers.

Speaking at the “Sias Volunteer Group” Association’s Music Night, the Minister of Labor stated that the pension reform bill, which concerns the first pillar and the Social Insurance Fund, has been finalized and is expected to be approved by the Cabinet and submitted to Parliament in the coming days so that debate on it can begin.

As he stated, the goal of the reform is to provide more adequate and fairer pensions, with increases effective January 1, 2027, within a system that will remain sustainable for future generations.

According to the Minister, the new provisions include subsidized social security credits for mothers, people with disabilities, young people returning from their studies, and informal caregivers.

Mr. Mousiouttas placed particular emphasis on informal caregivers, who, as he noted, care for parents or children on a daily basis, and the state should recognize their contribution in their social security coverage as well.

Referring to government support for the nonprofit sector, he said that this year approximately 27 million euros are being allocated to support 142 social care organizations through the State Aid Programs of the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare.

The Minister also referred to the tax reform, which took effect on January 1, 2026, noting that the tax-free threshold was raised and deductions were introduced for household expenses, such as children’s education, rent, and loan payments.

Finally, he linked the government’s reforms in social security, taxation, and education to the goal, as he stated, of a more just society that leaves no one behind.
