New problem for EDEK following Anastasiou’s resignation; when will the party hold its election convention?

A. Anthousi filed an objection to the election results

Endless infighting within the historic EDEK Movement, with Movement President Nicos Anastasiou resigning 50 days after the poor results of the parliamentary elections.

His resignation was laced with barbs directed at the stance of Movement members who played their own part in the recent parliamentary elections.

“It wasn’t easy, because behind those who turned their backs on us, there were—and continue to be—personal agendas. I hope this esteemed party will find its way again.” Nikos Anastasiou, Resigning President of EDEK

Nikos Anastasiou had been persuaded twice not to resign—once on election night and once at the Movement’s recent Congress— but he is now leaving for good, acknowledging that he was unable to calm tensions within EDEK.

“I tried desperately, convening all the party bodies (…) with the ultimate goal of defusing tensions within EDEK and putting the knives back in their sheaths. However, I have failed in my effort to unite the historic EDEK party.” Nikos Anastasiou, Resigning President of EDEK

The Deputy President, Morfakis Solomonides, will temporarily assume the presidency, with the party heading toward an Electoral Congress on a date to be decided shortly, in accordance with the provisions of EDEK’s bylaws.

In Electoral Court

The Electoral Court will rule on the complaint filed by Anastasia Anthousi, who on election night knew she had won DISY’s last seat in Nicosia.

However, shortly before midnight, the Nicosia seat was lost by DISY and went to ELAM and Andreas Papacharalambous, when the Ministry of the Interior announced that an error at the polling station in the village of Nikitari had been corrected.

Thus, 50 days later, Anastasia Anthousi is requesting a recount of the votes at that specific polling station—where an erroneous tally of 5 votes was recorded between ELAM and EDEK.

If the Electoral Court’s investigation ultimately reveals that the final tally on election night was correct, then the matter will be closed; but if it turns out that it was incorrect, then it cannot be ruled out that a redistribution of seats will be decided, which would affect a total of 4 seats in the districts of Nicosia, Paphos, Limassol, and Kyrenia.
