When the Greek community in Cyprus acts with determination and unity, it can achieve miracles, said DIKO President Nicholas Papadopoulos, following the military parade in Nicosia marking the anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus’s independence.
From the day of its founding, the Republic of Cyprus has faced challenges, with attempts to dismantle and abolish it, Mr. Papadopoulos said in his remarks. “Betrayals, coups, invasions, violence, and destruction were to be the first chapter of its existence,” he added. And yet, he continued, “the Cypriot people weathered the blows, fought, survived, and continue to this day to struggle for peace, liberation, and prosperity.”

“Today we honor those who gave us this opportunity; we honor those who fought, who defended the Republic of Cyprus, and those who sacrificed themselves so that our people might survive,” he said, noting that “above all, this day reminds us that the Cypriot Hellenic community, when it acts with determination and unity, can achieve miracles.”
Finally, he wished the Republic of Cyprus “Happy Birthday.”
