The former President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiades, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the newspaper “Estia.”
Upon arriving at the anniversary event “150 Years of Estia – Greece – Cyprus,” which took place in the ceremonial hall of the University of Cyprus, Mr. Anastasiades celebrated the 150 years of existence of “a newspaper that made history,” while emphasizing “how important the print media is, and responsible journalism compared to the mass media, which today, unfortunately, all too often act with complete irresponsibility, creating the very things we are experiencing—or the evils, if you will, that we are enduring.”
“Responsible journalism, codes of conduct, and accountability are one thing; what we see on the news is quite another,” he said.
In closing, the former President of the Republic expressed his hope that the newspaper “Estia” would continue on its path for many more decades, or even centuries, in service, as he put it, of the national interest.
