ALPHANEWSLIVE

Anita Dimitriou, President of DISY, has appointed Alekos Michaelides, former Director General of the Ministry of Transportation, Communications and Public Works, as her Special Advisor on addressing the traffic problem.

Ms. Dimitriou stated that Mr. Michaelides will assist in developing proposals to reduce traffic congestion, upgrading public transportation, and making it easier for citizens to get around on a daily basis. As she noted, his expertise in project planning and implementation, as well as his long service in positions of responsibility, bring significant know-how to this effort.

Ms. Dimitriou also stated that addressing the traffic problem is a priority for the Democratic Alarm. No more time should be wasted; on the contrary, planning to address the issue must begin as soon as possible.

The President of the Democratic Alarm also pointed out that the time lost daily on the roads, as well as the waste of fuel, comes at a cost to workers, families, and businesses. She emphasized that, for the Democratic Alarm, the development of an effective transportation system is a fundamental issue of quality of life and a prerequisite for urban development.

For his part, Mr. Michaelides thanked Ms. Dimitriou for her trust and emphasized that he would draw on his experience to identify weaknesses and evaluate the necessary interventions. As he noted, it is essential that proposals be based on actual data, have clear priorities, and be capable of yielding measurable results.

At the same time, Mr. Michailidis noted that addressing traffic issues requires a combination of measures related to infrastructure, decentralization, transportation planning, and available travel options, along with continuity in planning and consistency in implementation.

As he pointed out, “it is a complex problem that cannot be solved in the short term but requires long-term planning that must begin to be implemented immediately.”
