Odysseas Michaelides, head of “Alma,” launched a scathing attack against President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides from the studio of the “Alpha News” program Odysseas Michaelides, accusing him of using narrative tactics and pursuing self-serving interests in the Cyprus issue. As he said, he himself had “sensed” the negative atmosphere prevailing at the National Council meeting following Antonio Guterres’s visit, given the differing interpretations of the points he raised during the press conference held by the Portuguese official.
“Unfortunately, it seems that a window of opportunity that could have existed is closing soon. Five or six months ago, Mr. Christodoulides gave an interview to Emilia Kenevezou and spoke about a settlement plan. Unfortunately, it seems that partition is not just around the corner—it’s already here—and we’re talking about partition on the ground, but with the prospect that there will be nothing else. And unfortunately, the media spin has started again. Namely, that the President will meet with the prospective Secretaries-General. Here we had a European Secretary-General, a friend of the President of the European Council, who was acting on his own initiative.”
Mr. Michaelides pointed out that President Christodoulides, both publicly and before the National Council, interpreted the three points raised by Mr. Guterres not as “prerequisites” but as things that “would be good to do.” At the same time, he noted, that the international community is questioning whether any prospect of a solution to the Cyprus problem could be eliminated due to the failure to open the Mia Milia roadblock, and called on him to include thisat least as a precondition.
“The Secretary-General is fed up with them. He wouldn’t even agree to meet with them in New York. We understand that when someone has been designated as his successor, he’s already got one foot out the door.”
