The two sides “do not agree on the definition of the Cyprus problem”

The so-called foreign minister sees no path to a solution

The “foreign minister” Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu argued that statements regarding a “willingness to find a solution” to the Cyprus issue cannot lead to a result as long as the two sides do not agree on the definition of the problem.

In a written statement, Mr. Ertuğruloğlu stated that he agrees with the repeated remarks by the Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, regarding the Turkish Cypriot side’s willingness to reach a solution

He wondered, however, why the long-standing negotiations have not yielded results, given that both sides state they desire a solution. According to him, the answer lies in the fact that “what one side considers a solution, the other defines as a problem.”

Mr. Ertugruloglu also criticized the UN Security Council and the European Union, arguing that the former “created the problem” and the latter “entrenched it.” He added that “without international actors correcting the mistakes of the past,” there can be no outcome that satisfies the Turkish Cypriot side.

He identified the “unequal status” as a key issue, which he argued exists, noting that a solution cannot be expected as long as the Republic of Cyprus is treated internationally as a state and the Turkish Cypriot side as a community.

In conclusion, he stated that without a common understanding of the nature of the Cyprus problem, declarations of intent to find a solution from both sides “are meaningless.”
