Lieutenant General Mohammad Asadullah Minhazul Alam remains Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and continues to perform his duties, UNFICYP Spokesperson Aleem Siddique said Thursday, commenting on a media report regarding his status.
“We are aware of a recent report circulating that includes speculation regarding the status of the UNFICYP Commander, Lieutenant General Mohammad Asadullah Minhazul Alam,” Mr. Siddique said.
“To avoid any doubt, Lieutenant General Minhazul Alam remains the Commander of UNFICYP and continues to carry out his duties and responsibilities within the Mission,” he added.
The clarification followed a report on the Northeast News website, according to which Minhazul Alam’s tenure with the UN mission in Cyprus had been terminated following allegations concerning, as the report stated, his behavior toward officers serving under his command. The report also stated that he had returned to Bangladesh earlier this month.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had announced in April the appointment of Minhazul Alam as Commander of UNFICYP. He succeeded Major General Erdenebat Batsuuri of Mongolia.
