The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on the Cyprus Issue, María Ángela Olguín, is expected to travel to Ankara on July 26, ahead of António Guterres’s visit to Cyprus on July 27–29.
According to the ANKA news agency, Olguín will hold meetings in various European capitals, including Brussels and Ankara, as part of the preparations for the UN Secretary-General’s visit.
According to the same reports, she is expected to meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on July 26. The meeting is expected to address the latest diplomatic developments regarding the Cyprus issue, the positions of the parties involved, and the agenda for António Guterres’s visit to Cyprus.
ANKA also reports that the UN Secretary-General will make his final visit to Cyprus before the end of his term. According to the schedule, António Guterres will hold separate meetings with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman and President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Christodoulides, and will then chair a joint meeting of the two leaders.
At the same time, he is expected to meet with representatives of the bicommunal technical committees and civil society organizations, in order to be briefed on the progress of cooperation between the two communities and the prospects for restarting the negotiation process.
According to the ANKA news agency, Olgin’s meetings in Ankara and Brussels are considered crucial for finalizing the diplomatic preparations for Guterres’s visit and for clarifying the positions of the parties involved in light of the next steps in the Cyprus issue.
