The President of the Republic is waiting “on the sidelines” in New York until the very last moment, seeking to bring about a trilateral meeting with António Guterres and Tufan Erhurman. The situation will become clearer, if not sooner, during tomorrow’s one-on-one meeting on the 38th floor of the international organization, between the Secretary-General and the Turkish Cypriot leader at 8:00 p.m. Cyprus time. Diplomatic sources in New York estimate that there is a serious possibility of a trilateral meeting.

“It is important to see Mr. Erhurman’s stance, and no one can fail to recognize the value of a joint meeting with the UN Secretary-General.”
Konstantinos Letympiotis – Government Spokesperson

According to the schedule, the President of the Republic will return to Cyprus on Sunday morning. This could change even at the last minute if new developments arise.

“The UN is seeking to move things forward. If they determine that a meeting would help the effort, then they will proceed.”
Yiannis Antoniou – Deputy Government Spokesperson

Amid an even more tense climate surrounding the Cyprus issue last year, at the last minute and shortly before leaving the United States, on September 27, Guterres received Christodoulides and Tatar in his office. Therefore, nothing can be ruled out for this year.

The Turkish Cypriot press is avoiding predictions.  At this time, María Ángela Olguín is meeting with Menelaos Menelaou in New York, and she has also scheduled a meeting with the Turkish Cypriot negotiator.

A Speech with “Hints” of the Cyprus Issue

In a few lines, Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke before the General Assembly about 52 years of flagrant violations of international law, while expressing hope that there will be progress before the end of Guterres’s term.

“For the United Nations, Cyprus remains the ‘litmus test’ of its credibility: its ability to uphold its own resolutions and the principles of the Charter.”
