Former Member of the European Parliament Dimitris Papadakis has returned to his “political home,” EDEK, following the decision by the party’s new leadership to reinstate expelled members. Speaking on the Alpha News program, he explained that he intends to serve as a “rank-and-file member” of the party in order to contribute to the effort to rebuild and reorganize the Social Democratic Movement.
He views the EDEK Constitutional Convention as a “crash test” to demonstrate the party’s democratic processes and the new leadership’s commitment to ushering in a new era. He called for the proceedings to be conducted “the right way” and with dignity, while clarifying that he does not intend to seek any office in the run-up to EDEK’s Electoral Congress in early 2027.
When asked about the reactions of eleven members of the Political Bureau, he described them as “a storm in a teacup” and wondered where these members had been all this time to voice their concerns and disagreements, calling for the party to return to “business as usual.”
Regarding EDEK’s participation in the government, he explained that he prefers a party that can put forward positions and proposals to solve the problems citizens face on a daily basis, rather than a party that has members in the Cabinet.
Mr. Papadakis emphasized the need for genuine unity within EDEK, “not the kind DISY talks about—the kind that makes even the spotted goat laugh”— with the freedom to express disagreements and differing opinions for the good of the Movement, even by members and officials who have left or been expelled due to internal party conflicts.
