Outside the Ministry of Finance, dozens of citizens gathered at the protest organized by AKEL against rising prices, shouting at the government, “Take measures to combat rising prices.”
AKEL Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanou launched a fierce attack on the government, accusing it of taking a passive stance and lacking political will.
“There are solutions and measures that can be adopted to tackle inflation; provided there is the necessary political will to take the measures that are needed so that we can provide assistance to help people cope with these difficulties.”
He added that, to date, the government has demonstrated that not only does it lack the political will, but it also ignores the problems.
He referred to steps that other governments are already taking, adding that “here, the government simply states that it is monitoring the situation.”
At the same time, he stated that the government should already be taking measures, “but instead it is passively monitoring the situation.”
He also referred to proposals by AKEL, including the elimination of double taxation on fuel and transportation subsidies for low-income families.
“Take action, Mr. President; we can’t take the high cost of living anymore,” was the message Mr. Stefanou sent to the President of the Republic.
Members of the Direct Democracy party were also present at the protest.
