“Some parties—and I’m referring specifically to DISY, because I see a number of press releases from both parties every day—it’s very interesting that these press releases are identical; perhaps—and I’m just speculating—they’re issuing them jointly; they’ve entered an election campaign, but we won’t be following suit—we face extremely serious dilemmas ahead.”
Nikos Christodoulides – President of the Republic
An unprecedented
attack on Pindaros and Ezekias Papaioannou by President Christodoulides, who directly accuses the two largest parliamentary parties of thinking and acting with the 2028 election in mind.

And his stern remarks—following the memorial service for the heroes Tassos Isaac and Solomos Solomos — pertain to the accusations he had faced shortly before, namely that he had imposed his personal stamp on the appointment process for the boards of semi-governmental
organizations
“I have heard and read the statements being made. They come as no surprise to me, because quite simply, the party is over.”
Nikos Christodoulides – President of the Republic
At the same time, he
accused the two parties of having held parties during their own terms in office —one of which he himself was a part of—they threw a party that he himself put an end to by creating the Advisory Council.
“A free-for-all they used to engage in in the past, where one would get four, three to one, two to one, one to the other—and then the Advisory Council came along to put a stop to this party.”

Strong Reactions
The President of the Republic’s remarks were strongly criticized by both DISY and AKEL.
The left-wing party was the first to respond, accusing President Christodoulides of failing to explain his decisions, failing to be accountable to society, and undermining the Advisory Council, which he himself appointed.
“No, Mr. Christodoulides. The spree of appointments has not only not ended, but has actually intensified. If there is any doubt, one need only look at what happened in recent days at the Presidential Palace, when the president of DIKO, Mr. Nikolas Papadopoulos, went there with his lists demanding greater representation for his party in the semi-governmental organizations.”
AKEL
Shortly thereafter, DISY criticized the President of the Republic for being unable to handle political criticism calmly and rationally.
“Instead of respecting both the setting in which he found himself and the office he holds, he chose to make unacceptable, offensive, and highly divisive remarks. At the very same time that he himself has repeatedly questioned what distinguishes his policies from those of DISY, yesterday he did not hesitate to attempt, in an offensive manner, to equate DISY with AKEL.”
DISY
: The President’s Office responded at noon through the Government Spokesperson.
“The DISY leadership is protesting because the President spoke of an equation with AKEL and, almost simultaneously, AKEL issued a statement confirming precisely that alignment. It would be hard to imagine a more eloquent response.”
Konstantinos Letympiotis – Government Spokesperson

“It has now become the norm: when the government cannot justify its actions to the public—and to the media that pointed out the shortcomings—it blames the opposition parties and considers the matter settled.”.
Onoufrios Koulla – DISY
Spokesperson
In a battle of press releases that lasted until late afternoon.
See Giorgos Chrysanthos’s report:
In a new written statement late this afternoon, DISY Press Secretary Onoufrios Koulla responded once again to the government, noting that “We understand the difficult position the government finds itself in, having been caught red-handed deceiving citizens by claiming it had made merit-based appointments.”
The statement in its entirety
We understand the difficult position the government finds itself in, having been caught red-handed deceiving citizens by claiming it had made merit-based appointments.
So that the Government Spokesperson isn’t taken by surprise, we will continue to respond whenever the government provokes us.
And let the President not forget that if there was a “party,” as he said, then he himself participated in it without complaint for an entire decade.
It’s not enough that they appointed party officials and friends of the President—some of them through the back door—they want us to believe that this happened by chance and based on an objective evaluation.
The Democratic Alarm knows what it stands for. But what does our center-right orientation have to do with the mockery, the cronyism, and the expediency of the Presidency?
It’s not an ideological issue. It’s the mindset that’s troubling. It’s the lack of arguments and convincing answers.
Do they want us to pat them on the back, too?
