"War" in the House of Representatives as Well: Letympiotis and Ioannidis Exchange Barbs; Government-DISY Feud Reaches a Climax

Ioannidis's barbs and Letympiotis's response

The public dispute between the government and DISY over appointments to the boards of directors of quasi-governmental organizations continues, this time on X, with Michalis Ioannidis and Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letympiotis trading barbs.

The head of DISY’s Council for Monitoring Government Work, Michalis Ioannidis, states in a post that the Government Spokesperson’s approach “exudes ingratitude,” while calling on the government to limit mistakes and “self-inflicted crises” and to ensure consistency between words and actions.

Mr. Ioannidis focuses, among other things, on the deviations from the Advisory Council’s recommendations, demanding specific explanations for the government’s choices.

“What is the rationale for each deviation regarding every candidate not on the list? What parallel process was followed for those candidates who were on a list other than that of the Advisory Council? What are the differences between the candidates you selected and those chosen by the advisory committee?” These are the questions he raises.

For his part, Konstantinos Letympiotis calls on Mr. Ioannidis to set aside general criticisms and present specific positions and proposals.

The Government Spokesperson argues that public dialogue requires not only criticism but also objective positions, calling on DISY to acknowledge the positive changes that, according to the Government, have already been made.

“Why can’t you, on the one hand, invoke the institution as a guarantee of meritocracy and, on the other hand, refuse to acknowledge even its creation as a positive reform? Unless there is such an aversion to anything coming from the government that even regarding the very things you are defending today, you find it difficult to admit that they are steps in the right direction.”

Regarding the GSI, the Central Committee stated that “your reference is rather unfortunate and untimely. But since you’ve brought up the topic, let’s get specific. From 2012 to the present, when exactly did the project have better prospects than it does today? And when exactly did the Republic of Cyprus play a greater role? On which positions and stances—shared by the President and the Prime Minister—do you have, or did you have, a different opinion? It is not our own efforts and our joint course with Greece that have laid new foundations for this project. Tell us specifically—with dates, events, and facts. I will listen with genuine interest.”

In closing, Mr. Letympiotis stated, “Criticism is necessary in a democracy. However, dismissing everything is not a political proposal.”
