There’s a whiff of presidential elections in the air, with the government striving to implement Nikos Christodoulides’ campaign promises. The issue was briefly touched upon yesterday during a meeting at the Presidential Palace between the President of the Republic and Nikolas Papadopoulos. The agenda was wide-ranging, with Nikos Christodoulides attempting to keep the lines of communication open with DIKO, while the President himself leaves all scenarios regarding the presidential election open. The President of the Republic states, however, that he has not yet made his final decisions.
“When I make my decisions, I will honestly and sincerely address the Cypriot people to tell them whether or not I will run again. And this will happen sometime in 2027.” Nikos Christodoulides, President of the Republic
For him, the Cyprus issue takes precedence over the presidential race. However, with the presidential election on the horizon, he reaffirms that he was and remains a member of Synergatiko.
“I am a member of the Democratic Alarm Party because I come from this political tradition. The policies we are implementing are directly aligned with the long-standing policies of the Democratic Alarm Party, and naturally, I also speak with members of the Democratic Alarm Party. That is the movement from which I come.” Nikos Christodoulides, President of the Republic
At the same time, he maintains contact with all political parties.
Tailoring a Candidate’s Image
Within AKEL, a dialogue with the grassroots has begun as Andreas Mavrogiannis prepares for a comeback, banking on the support of Ezekia Papaioannou.
“It is AKEL’s support that would make my candidacy electable.” Andreas Mavroyiannis
On the Alpha News program, he stated that he has already met several times with Averof Neophytou for general discussions, thanking him for his support in the 2023 second round.
“Mr. Neophytou would be an excellent opponent for me.” Andreas Mavrogiannis
