Referring to the exceptionally high level of Cyprus–United States relations, as well as to the ongoing developments regarding the Cyprus issue in the run-up to the United Nations General Assembly, the President of the Republic, Nicos Christodoulides, made remarks.
When asked to comment on the United States’ renewal of the lifting of the arms embargo against the Republic of Cyprus, he spoke of “a clear message” regarding relations between Nicosia and Washington, which, he said, are constantly strengthening, particularly in the areas of defense and security.

The President noted that, in addition to this specific decision, other cooperation programs with the U.S. are underway, including the modernization of the Republic of Cyprus’ infrastructure, with particular reference to the “Andreas Papandreou” Air Base. At the same time, as he noted, discussions are underway regarding the purchase of defense systems from the United States, while, for the first time, Cypriots are studying at U.S. military academies. “Especially on matters of defense and security, there is excellent cooperation, which has never been at such a high level,” he emphasized.
Regarding the Cyprus issue, Nikos Christodoulides refrained from disclosing the outcome of the phone conversation between the United Nations Secretary-General and María Ángela Olguín. “I will not be the one to make the outcome of the discussion public,” he stated.
He added, however, that preparations are continuing ahead of the UN General Assembly week, both at the negotiators’ level and at the political level. As he said, the goal is to achieve results that will lead to the “desired objective,” namely an announcement regarding the resumption of negotiations.
