The campaign for the 2028 presidential election has already begun, despite the fact that almost everyone publicly admits it is quite early.
The election will take place in 16 months, with the parties and key stakeholders already gearing up, as potential coalitions will be finalized before the end of the year, which will largely determine the dynamics that will emerge once the official campaign period begins.
AKEL
Within AKEL, discussions have begun, aimed at establishing the political framework for selecting the candidate who will run in the election.
At AKEL, led by Ezechia Papaioannou, they are well aware that there are not many obstacles in the way during this election campaign, since the battle raging between the presidential camp and the Pindaros camp works in the party’s favor, allowing it to achieve a better election result than in 2023—whatever that may mean.
Of course, for this to happen, the right person must be found, a matter that will be discussed in the coming weeks at the scheduled regional conferences.
Behind the scenes, at the moment, the discussion centers on the party’s strategy.
Specifically, whether it will proceed with a party official—something that last happened in 2008 with Dimitris Christofias — or whether it will continue its practice of seeking a candidate from outside AKEL, as was done in 2023 with Andreas Mavroyiannis. One name that will be back on the table is
Pindarou and the Presidency
Within the Democratic Rally, what is expected to become clear is the decision of the party’s former president.
If he chooses the party route, then on November 28 the party will know who will receive the nomination—either Anita Dimitriou, Averof Neophytou, and Giorgos Pamborides.
However, if Mr. Neophytou chooses to run as an independent, then things become much more complicated, as everyone in DISY
acknowledges
“Today, every party member must ask themselves: Is Averof, with what he’s doing—if he ends up, as I hope he won’t, outside the party’s procedures—tramping all over a process that he himself supported?”
Nikos Nouris – Former Vice President of DISY
Political Moves
Amid all this, the decision to be made by the Democratic Party will be of crucial importance, with Nikolas Papadopoulos reportedly being urged, according to the newspaper “A,” to withdraw the party from the government and run for office himself.
“ALETHEIA” newspaper
DIKO officials and close associates of Nikolas Papadopoulos are pressuring him to seriously consider running in the presidential election.
Beyond that, the decisions made by ELAM and ALMA, in the event that they field their own candidate, will further influence the pre-election landscape, while the moves made by Direct Democracy will also be of decisive importance.
