Internal party procedures in DISY set for a slight extension: The scenario gaining ground in the Political Bureau

The Pindarou Committee has been in session for more than 2.5 hours

The process for selecting the DISY candidate for the 2028 presidential election appears to be heading toward a slight delay.

As reported by Evangelos Agapiou from Pindarou on Alpha TV’s main newscast, according to sources, the proposal gaining traction in the Political Bureau is to extend the process by one week to one month.

The Political Bureau has been meeting for more than 2.5 hours, with Anita Dimitriou proposing that the 250 members of the party’s organized groups sign off on all nominations to make things easier for the candidates.

Meanwhile, Giorgos Pamporidis, who also expressed his intention before the Political Bureau to run as a candidate in the internal party elections, proposed a 3- to 5-day extension from October 13 for the submission of candidacies, so that the necessary signatures could be collected.

Absent from the meeting is the party’s former president, Averof Neophytou, who is currently abroad, and former President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades, who has distanced himself from the party’s collective bodies due to the “State Mafia” scandal

Averof’s cryptic post ahead of the Political Bureau meeting

Averof Neophytou made an enigmatic statement shortly before the crucial meeting of the DISY Political Bureau. A post unlike his previous ones, in which he assured that he would never betray his fellow Democratic Rally members while speaking highly of the party and its history.

“I have never doubted the pure and selfless spirit of our historic party, the Democratic Alarm. We have walked this path together for the past 50 years […] through successes and failures. I will never betray you.”

Even this statement of his, however, cannot lead to hasty conclusions, since he insists on not clarifying whether he will follow the path of internal party procedures. At the same time, he makes a commitment to society as a whole.

“We will not allow anyone to betray our shared vision and our plan for our country and our children again. And this is my commitment to all my fellow citizens and to society as a whole.”
Averof Neophytou

According to information from Alpha, the post was written after he received dozens of messages from members of his political faction urging him to avoid running as an independent, with Averof Neophytou clarifying once again that all decisions will bein due course. Averof Neophytou says he is open to a new meeting with Annita Dimitriou, with his close associates saying he never refused. Pindarou insists that a potential independent run by the former president would be disastrous.

“Everything that’s happening—which causes us great distress—is leading us to strengthen any political opponent, whether his name is Nikos Christodoulides or AKEL.”
Savia Orfanidou – DISY Member of Parliament

On the Alpha News program, former Member of Parliament Christos Pourgourides sounded the alarm about the present and future of the party.

“Pretending there’s no problem is a problem in itself, and it’s a serious one. Those who supported Christodoulides in 2023 are trying to drag the party into a partnership with Christodoulides. Each of us has our own personal agenda; if it serves our interests, we’ll go along with it.”
Christos Pourgourides

The Alarm Party members arrived at the political office that afternoon divided into new factions.
