AKEL has launched a new attack against the government and the President of the Republic over the appointment of criminal investigators to probe the “Mafia State.”
“The government either does not realize or is pretending not to realize the fiasco it has created in appointing criminal investigators to probe the Anti-Corruption Authority’s findings and the ‘Mafia State.’” Mr. Mylonopoulos’s resignation following the backlash over the conflict of interest and his replacement by Ilias Anagnostopoulos, the lawyer for Tal Dilian in the case of illegal wiretapping in Greece, “not only fail to restore but actually exacerbate the crisis of credibility surrounding the entire process.”
As the Left party adds, “the fundamental problem, of course, remains the refusal of the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General—both former ministers under Nikos Anastasiadis—to resign. Their so-called recusal does not resolve the conflict of interest. Their presence continues to taint the process.”
President Christodoulides bears full responsibility, AKEL emphasizes.
“Instead of ensuring a criminal investigation beyond any shadow of a doubt, his choices cast further doubt and reinforce concerns that an attempt is being made to cover up the very serious findings of the Anti-Corruption Authority, which center on his political mentor, N. Anastasiades,” he adds.
