The government spokesperson described Antonio Guterres’s upcoming visit to Cyprus as very important, noting that this will be the first visit by a United Nations Secretary-General to the island in 16 years.
Speaking on state television, Konstantinos Letympiotis emphasized that this is not a courtesy visit.
The Secretary-General’s goal, he added, is to help make an informal multilateral conference on the Cyprus issue possible.
At the same time, he noted that Guterres’s upcoming visit sends a clear message to those who had invested in stagnation and the current status quo.

According to Mr. Letympiotis, it is feasible to aim for an informal multilateral conference before the end of summer, provided that Turkey adopts a constructive stance and abandons its demand for a two-state solution.
He also noted that the goal of the multilateral conference is to resume negotiations from the point at which they were suspended.
Commenting on reports of new ideas regarding the Cyprus issue, Mr. Letympiotis emphasized that it is non-negotiable that any talks must take place within the framework of United Nations Security Council resolutions and the principles, values, and law of the European Union.
