For “distorting the facts” regarding the Cyprus issue, as mentioned in the speech by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, before the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement, also claiming that the President made “baseless accusations” against the Republic of Turkey.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs refers to “manipulation of the international community and global public opinion through lies,” as it claims, “once again ignoring the persecution, forced displacement, and serious human rights violations to which the Turkish Cypriot people were subjected between 1963 and 1974”.

In fact, he characterizes President Christodoulides’ remarks as “insolent and rude comments” directed at Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, while arguing that President Christodoulides’ “inappropriate” tone “demonstrates the kind of irrational behavior to which the ambitions of the Greek Cypriot Administration can lead,” as stated by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus.

He further maintains the position that, “no matter what Christodoulides says, this will not change the fact that there are two distinct peoples and two distinct states on the island of Cyprus.” He says that President Christodoulides’ call for a return to negotiations, based on a model that “has remained fruitless due to the intransigent and maximalist stance of the Greek Cypriot side, which refuses to recognize the equal status of the TRNC” —as referred to in the pseudo-state—reveals, according to the “Foreign Ministry’s” claim, the intention to continue exploiting the “unjust position” acquired by the “so-called ‘Republic of Cyprus’ has acquired.”

It further argues that “under these circumstances, the real hypocrisy lies in the insistence on the ‘federation’ model, which has clearly failed to produce results in the past and has been repeatedly rejected by the Greek Cypriot Administration,” according to the wording of the statement.

The statement goes on to note that “the most fundamental fact that must be understood regarding the Cyprus issue is the existence of two distinct peoples living side by side on the island, as well as two distinct, independent, and sovereign states. Reaching a lasting agreement on the island depends, as Mr. Erdoğan has emphasized at every opportunity—and most recently in his speech to the UN General Assembly on September 23, 2026— on the international community’s recognition of the sovereign equality and equal international standing of the TRNC.” “Policies that ignore the Turkish Cypriots will continue to be doomed to failure in the future, just as they have been in the past,” the Foreign Ministry concludes.
