The former president of the Social Democratic Movement (EDEK) is launching a fierce attack on the developments within the party ahead of the elections to select a new leadership, following the resignation of President Nikos Anastasiou, has been unleashed by the party’s former president and former Speaker of the House, Giannakis Omirou.
In a written statement, he expresses sorrow over “the unprecedented events unfolding regarding the procedures for electing the EDEK President on September 5.”
“In a political party whose history has been defined by struggles and sacrifices for democracy, an attempt is being made to trample on every rule of transparency and the free expression of members’ views. By prohibiting candidates’ observers from being present at polling stations, by closing polling stations, with the obvious intent of depriving voters of their right to vote, and by selecting locations for polling stations that will hinder rather than facilitate participation in the voting process.”
Mr. Omirou notes that “after leading EDEK to electoral defeat in the parliamentary elections, after decapitating the party through suspensions and expulsions of officials and members, they are now proceeding toward a flawed and questionable electoral process that lacks legitimacy.”
“With a sense of responsibility for my long journey with EDEK as a member, a district official, central party official, and party president for 14 years, I appeal for a demonstration—even at the very last moment— respect for the rules of democracy and the upholding of an impartial institutional process, which will offer hope that EDEK can find a way out of the current impasses.”
