There is no indication whatsoever that the schedule is changing. The milestone of the United Nations General Assembly remains.

While there may be no indications at this time, the government is on standby, waiting to see if there will be a new request from the Turkish Cypriot leadership to postpone the leaders’ meeting once again.

Such a request would not, however, be unfounded, for two main reasons.

First, the uproar over the deadly shipwreck has yet to die down, and second, there is political instability in the occupied territories, culminating in the collapse of the pseudo-government.

The picture will become clearer by tomorrow at the latest, as a meeting of the negotiators is scheduled for Monday. “The meeting will take place next

week on September 9.The United Nations Secretary-General’s personal envoy is also expected to arrive in Cyprus shortly thereafter, following the first ten days of September. In the coming days, likely early next week, Maria Olgin will meet with António Guterres in New York.”

At the headquarters of the international organization, they are closely monitoring developments in the occupied territories, while remaining steadfast in the commitments made by António Guterres during his historic visit to Nicosia.
And indicating that there is still a long way to go before the Secretary-General announces a date for an informal five-party conference

.““I think that, as we always say, any expanded 5+1 meeting must be properly prepared for the future, and that requires serious discussions.”

The European Factor

The role of the European Union in the new effort currently underway will also be addressed during tomorrow’s visit by European Council President António Costa to Nicosia

.“Our position is clear: The process is taking place under the auspices of the United Nations, and the European Union can play a supportive and catalytic role by leveraging its political weight, resources, and incentives.”
Konstantinos Letympiotis – Government Spokesperson

Noting that further progress in EU-Turkey relations can provide the tools enabling Turkey to contribute substantially to the resumption of negotiations and to the effort to resolve the Cyprus issue, always within the framework of UN Security Council resolutions.
