The former DISY president had made his intentions known a few days ago; in his statements, he had said that if there were no developments on the Cyprus issue within the week, he would run for office.
Here is Averof’s statement verbatim:
Unfortunately, the window of hope for the Cyprus issue remained closed.
Following the high-level talks in New York, not the slightest agreement was reached.
Mr. Guterres, who had staked his legacy on a solution to the Cyprus issue, is stepping down in three months.
The deadlocks remain.
The dark clouds looming over the island are growing ever denser.
I warned in vain that time is not on our side. We have not even managed to launch a negotiation process.
It seems I was speaking to deaf ears. The country’s leadership chose to stick to the beaten path.
I share the anxiety and the call of a large segment of our compatriots for a national awakening, for mobilization with the vision of reuniting our homeland and ending the Occupation.
A patriotic awakening that will pull us out of the lethargy of passivity, resignation, and de facto acceptance of the status quo.
I join this sacred struggle.
I declare my candidacy and submit my nomination for the 2028 Presidential Election.
To solve the major problems facing our country.
To give young people a future.
To build a just society.
Above all,
for a Reunited Homeland.
Together, We Move Forward.
