Hashim Dian, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative and head of the UN peacekeeping force on the island (UNFICYP), Hashim Dian, during a briefing for UN Security Council member states held on Thursday in New York behind closed doors, which lasted approximately one hour and thirty minutes.
According to information from KYPE, Mr. Dian highlighted the significant efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, María Ángela Olguín, in her intensive contacts with both sides to bring about a resumption of negotiations.
European member states of the UN Security Council (France, Latvia, Greece, Denmark), as well as the U.S., are reported to have expressed their support for a solution based on the agreed framework for a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality.
Pakistan and Somalia reportedly referred to “economic inequalities” and “conditions of isolation” on the island for the Turkish Cypriot community.
