It will take months to review the objection filed by Anastasia Anthousi with the Electoral Court regarding a possible error in the vote count at a polling station in Nikitari.
Through this appeal, Ms. Anthousi is initially requesting a recount of the votes at that specific ballot box—where there was an erroneous recording of 5 votes split between ELAM and EDEK.
“What played a role was that the party to which the votes were initially assigned, having lost those 5 votes, failed to secure a seat in the first allocation, and with that remainder—the remainder—it carried over the entire remainder to the second allocation.”
Menelaos Vassiliou – Head of the Election
Service In a past election petition that wasn’t all that complex, it took 9–10 months to review. If Anastasia Anthousi is vindicated, then a flurry of seat swaps, resignations, and new arrivals among MPs will follow.
If the 6th seat returns to Nicosia and Anastasia Anthousi ultimately takes a seat in the House of Representatives, ELAM loses its third seat in the capital, and Andreas Papacharalambous loses his status as a member of parliament.
Consequently, DISY loses its fourth seat in Limassol, and Michalis Kounounis loses his seat. That seat will go to DIKO, sending Evi Tsolaki to the House of Representatives.
In Paphos, the seat held by Direct Democracy is lost, and Dimitris Baros is left out of the House of Representatives. ELAM takes the seat, and the party’s resigning vice president, Michalis Michael, secures a seat in Parliament.
In Kyrenia, DIKO loses its single seat, and Adamos Aspris automatically loses his position; Konstantinos Kyprianou of Direct Democracy enters Parliament
. “This is the first time that five votes have had such a significant impact on the outcome; it troubled us then and continues to trouble us now, and we’ll have to see how it plays out in future elections. In any case, I believe this is a political issue; it is a matter for Parliament.”
Menelaos Vassiliou
In any case, the balance in the distribution of seats remains unchanged; each party retains the number of seats it secured.
