The drums of war are “beating” within the Democratic Party, ahead of the party’s Political Bureau’s crucial meeting, which is expected to ratify the Executive Bureau’s recommendations regarding the candidate selection process for the 2028—specifically, the submission of nominations for the presidential nomination on October 13, 2026.
Party officials and executives are now taking sides for or against Annita Dimitriou and Averof Neophytou, publicly expressing their views and submitting proposals and recommendations regarding the process.
Michalis Sophocleous, a former DISY MP and former head of the “Glafkos Clerides” Institute, stated on the “Koureio” with Stelios Xiouris that Anita Dimitriou gives the impression of being a “one-trick pony,” having won the Speakership of the House of Representatives and now vying for the Presidency of the Republic. He also admitted that he is more aligned with the policies of Averof Neophytou and that he has no intention of becoming a mere “yes-man” for the party leadership.
Petros Papadopoulos, DISY Commissioner for Human Rights Policy Coordination and ex officio member of the DISY Political Bureau, has addressed an open letter to all members of the Political Bureau, outlining his position regarding the party’s candidate selection process for the presidential election. At the same time, Mr. Papadopoulos clarifies his own political stance, declaring his open and full support for DISY President Annita Dimitriou, as the candidate who, in his view, should represent the party in the presidential election.

In a letter to the DISY President, Marios Gavriilides, a member of the party’s Political Bureau, states “that the timeframe currently proposed for conducting the process is particularly limited and does not allow sufficient time for a substantive political dialogue to develop between the candidates and the party’s grassroots.”
