Michalis Persianis, the former Chairman of the Fiscal Council, has joined DISY’s “shadow cabinet.”
According to a party announcement, the President of the Democratic Alarm and Chair of the Government Work Monitoring Council, Ms. Anita Dimitriou, announced today the appointment of Mr. Michalis Persianis as Head of the Horizontal Portfolio for Resilience and Development.
“This portfolio will monitor and evaluate policies that affect the long-term resilience and growth prospects of the Cypriot economy, offering specific recommendations on issues of fiscal responsibility, productivity, competitiveness, investment, and reforms. As a cross-cutting portfolio, it will collaborate with all of the Council’s individual portfolios to ensure that the dimensions of resilience and sustainable development are comprehensively integrated into the Democratic Alarm’s policy proposals.”
This is one of the Council’s three cross-cutting portfolios, along with the Public Sector Efficiency Portfolio, led by Coordinator Michalis Ioannidis, and the Transparency Portfolio, headed by Georgia Panagiotou.
Welcoming Mr. Persianis to the Council, the President of the Democratic Alarm Party stated:
“Cyprus needs a development model that is not limited to today’s performance, but one that can withstand the crises and challenges of tomorrow.
It needs fiscal discipline, a boost in productivity and competitiveness, the attraction of investment, and reforms that create real and sustainable prospects.
Michalis Persianis possesses a deep understanding of the Cypriot economy, significant experience in fiscal policy, and a proven technocratic approach. His participation substantially strengthens the Council’s work and capabilities.”
For his part, Mr. Michalis Persianis thanked the President of the Democratic Alarm for her trust and stated:
“I accept this responsibility with a commitment to work hard and make a meaningful contribution. Strengthening the resilience of the Cypriot economy and creating the conditions for sustainable growth require consistency, seriousness, and evidence-based decisions.
I will work together with the members of the Council to formulate concrete and actionable proposals that will address today’s needs and the challenges of the coming years.”
Michalis Persianis served as Chairman of the Cyprus Fiscal Council from 2022 until July 2026. Previously, he served as Director of Corporate Affairs at the Bank of Cyprus, a correspondent for the Wall Street Journal/Dow Jones, and Editor-in-Chief of Economics and Financial Affairs at the newspaper “I Kathimerini” in Cyprus.
He studied Political Science at Rutgers University and completed graduate studies in International Relations and International Economics at Johns Hopkins University–SAIS.
