The EDEK Extraordinary Pan-Cyprian Congress is taking place today; it was convened at the suggestion of the party’s president, Nikos Anastasiou.
The Congress, which is taking place at the POED building in Nicosia, was decided upon by the Political Bureau at its meeting on June 24, adopting a proposal by the party’s President, namely, that instead of the Central Committee meeting scheduled for June 28, 2026, an open Extraordinary Pan-Cypriot Congress be convened for July 5, 2026.
Nikos Anastasiou had stated that “following the negative outcome of the May parliamentary elections and the party’s failure to secure a seat in Parliament after receiving 3.3% of the vote island-wide and taking seriously into account the discussions and concerns raised at the Central Committee meeting on June 7,” he decided, exercising the powers granted to him by Article 31 – Paragraph 2 of the party’s Bylaws, to convene an Extraordinary Congress on Sunday, July 5, 2026.
The purpose and goal, he said, “is to give as many members as possible the right to express themselves freely and democratically.”
His decision “is based on the need to make decisions and take steps toward redesigning the party’s activities, with the aim of continuing its policy of engagement at the national and social levels.”
Mr. Anastasiou had also noted that “decisions and actions are needed so that EDEK can take more effective action to intervene and address the problems that threaten and plague Cyprus.”
Agenda for the Extraordinary Congress
The topics to be discussed and on which decisions are expected to be made at today’s Extraordinary Congress are:
1. Central Committee Decision of June 7, 2026, regarding the convening of a Constitutional, Ideological–Political, and Electoral Congress
2. EDEK Membership Register, based on the Central Committee’s decision dated July 23, 2025
3. Conducting a financial audit and review of assets
4. Management of financial data in light of the loss of a significant portion of state subsidies / evaluation and necessary reorganization of professional staff.”
