Speaking on the Alpha Kalimera show with reporter Eleni Fanari outside the Aglantzia Municipal Office, Ms. Hatzandreou said she is ready to get to work.

“We’re already outside the Aglantzia City Hall. We started working this morning, keeping people informed, talking to the media, of course, about what happened yesterday here in Aglantzia, and we’re ready to deliver on our promises through hard work, of course.”

When asked to comment on the high abstention rate in the election, Ms. Hatzandreou attributes the phenomenon both to the nature of the elections—which were by-elections—and to the time of year they were held, in the middle of summer, when people have plans, are away, or at the beach.

“It is certainly the case that we had very few days, literally, officially, for both me and my opponent to campaign and inform the public, together with our campaign teams and volunteers. We both made a joint effort to achieve this to the extent that time allowed. As recently as yesterday, we were meeting people who didn’t know the election was yesterday. They thought they were either in July or next September. So, we were fighting an uphill battle against time, and of course, there’s also the fact that the prevailing atmosphere surrounding the role of deputy mayor created the impression that voting was unnecessary, because it’s a role that has no reason to exist in local government—something I certainly don’t believe. That is why I ran for the position—precisely to prove that, even within a specific framework that has gaps, we can create, collaborate with the public, and move forward.”

He thanked everyone who worked both inside and outside the polling stations. He noted that while voter turnout may have been low—which we expected—it was nonetheless a democratic electoral process with all its significance.

“And today, my opponent and I will sit side by side. Because the vote shares may be this much for one candidate and that much for the other. But taken together, they all count toward Aglantzia.”

When asked about her priorities, Ms. Hatzandreou stated that during the campaign she presented sensible, well-considered, and down-to-earth, explaining that she did so because we have only 2.5–3 years left until the end of the term.

“We must be very specific. We focused on three main areas, on thoughts and ideas that we developed together with everyone who supported my candidacy, and I thank them warmly. The first priority is the projects in Aglantzia that have stalled—they’ve stalled because the studies and permitting processes aren’t moving forward. We must resolve these issues so that we can include at least some of them in the 2027 budget—projects that are emblematic of Aglantzia, such as the swimming pool and and the revitalization of the historic center.”

He adds that the second pillar is cleanliness, safety, and the environment—a category in its own right—which requires particular attention and sensitivity. He goes on to note that the third pillar, which he describes as the creative aspect, consists of new, small-scale initiatives that come from both residents and the local government—initiatives that are either low-cost or free but have a significant impact on the community.

“These things can be done; they are initiatives that no one can stop you from carrying out. They may involve educating residents, prevention, or raising environmental awareness. There is so much that can be done, and we hope that through the partnerships and bridges we’ve already built—with the public, with political forces, and with the Mayor of Nicosia himself, the Deputy Mayors, and the members of the City Council, we will achieve what we set out to do.”

Her official swearing-in as Deputy Mayor of Aglantzia is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
