The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, as agreed during their meeting last Tuesday. The event begins at 7:00 p.m. at the community’s futsal field.
The United Nations announced the two leaders’ joint appearance at the festival on October 13, following their meeting in the UN-protected area in Nicosia. According to the announcement, the discussions took place in a positive atmosphere, and the two leaders agreed to meet again next week.
The same statement noted that they are looking forward to the upcoming visit of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Olguín. They also agreed to participate jointly in upcoming meetings of the Technical Committees on Cultural Heritage and Youth, as well as the Coordinating Committee of the Civil Society Advisory Body.
Returning to the Presidential Palace after the meeting, President Christodoulides stated that he had accepted the invitation to the festival from the very beginning. As he noted, Mr. Erhurman informed him during their discussion that he himself would also be attending.
The President described the meeting as positive, saying that they discussed the methodology, the substance of the Cyprus issue, and the confidence-building measures. He reiterated that the goal remains the resumption of talks.
As reported to CNA, the Turkish Cypriot community leader of Pyla, Veysal Güden, said the festival is returning after a seven-year hiatus.
The festival began in 2015, and the last edition took place in 2019. It was suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic and had not been held since.
This year’s event is being organized by the Pyla Community Council, in collaboration with the Turkish Cypriot community leader and the United Nations. The program includes music, traditional dances, and booths featuring associations and organized groups from both communities. Admission will be free.
