During their nearly three-hour meeting on Wednesday, the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, at the offices of the United Nations Good Offices Mission, in the airport area of the Nicosia buffer zone.
In remarks following his arrival at the Presidential Palace, President Christodoulides said that the discussion—during most of which the leaders spoke privately—was positive.
“It was a good meeting—I must say— which is why it lasted nearly three hours, with the vast majority of that time spent just between myself and the Turkish Cypriot leader. Preparations have begun based on what the UN Secretary-General has stated publicly,” he said.
Specifically, upon arriving at the Presidential Palace, the President of the Republic stated that “preparations have begun based on what the Secretary-General has publicly stated. We discussed substantive issues. When I say ‘substantive,’ I am referring to the meetings. It is particularly important to safeguard the negotiating gains right up until the last day in Crans-Montana. We discussed methodology; Mr. Erhurman’s four positions are well known. I presented some of our own approaches, specifically how negotiations can be more effective through a cross-cutting—if I may say so—negotiation process. All issues. We cannot discuss just one issue in isolation. Cross-cutting negotiations are necessary for progress to be made. We discussed confidence-building measures.”
He added that “regarding the roadblocks, we did not limit ourselves to the well-known issue of Mia Milia and Pyroi-Athinon. We also discussed the other three that we had agreed upon with the Secretary-General in March 2025, namely Pyroi-Athienou, Kokkina, Mia Milia, and Louroukina. I submitted some proposals. Some are repeats, because we are awaiting a response regarding the enclaved residents.”
At the same time, among other things, he expressed to the Turkish Cypriot side “our readiness, if and when talks resume—which is our goal—to consider additional measures, unilateral measures, on the part of the Republic of Cyprus, such as the 14 I had announced,”
