The decision by the Plenary Session of Parliament to reject the urgent motion for a six-month extension of the term of the Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, is pushing relations between the government and the opposition to the breaking point, ushering in a new cycle of intense political confrontation.
Following up on President Christodoulides’ statements, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letympiotis launched a scathing attack against DISY and AKEL.

In a post, Mr. Letympiotis dismissed the argument about a lack of time to review a two-page bill as a pretext, while directing particularly sharp criticism at the DISY leadership, accusing it of sacrificing the country’s critical European claims—such as funds from the Multiannual Financial Framework—for the sake of opposition-driven expediency. At the same time, he sends a clear message ahead of the next plenary session on July 14, calling on the parties to assume their responsibilities.
