DIKO President Nikolas Papadopoulos and the new President of EDEK, Sofia Christodoulou Mak, during a meeting on Monday afternoon at DIKO’s headquarters.
In their statements following the meeting, the two presidents referred to the need to maintain open communication between the two parties and to the existence of areas for cooperation, with Mr. Papadopoulos noting that the relevant dialogue could continue after the completion of the process for electing the remainder of EDEK’s leadership.
The DIKO President described the meeting as “very interesting, useful, and constructive” and wished the new EDEK President every success in her duties. Referring to EDEK, he said it is a historic party with a “rich social and national legacy,” while noting that DIKO and EDEK have successfully collaborated in the past.
“Certainly, from our side, we want this cooperation to continue and expand in the future,” he said.
Mr. Papadopoulos said that during the meeting, the broader prospect of cooperation among centrist parties was discussed. As he noted, DIKO’s position is that this particular political space must present “proposals, positions, and solutions” for citizens who are not represented by the extremist parties.
At the same time, he noted that DIKO respects the internal party process currently underway in EDEK for the election of the rest of the party’s leadership. “As soon as that is completed, we are here, ready to continue this very important dialogue,” he said.
For her part, EDEK President Sofia Christodoulou Makri described the possibility of cooperation among centrist forces at the political level as particularly important. “I am certain that this open communication will continue,” she said, adding that there is common ground for cooperation, especially at a time when, as she noted, extremist ideologies are on the rise.
Ms. Christodoulou also said that during the meeting, key current issues affecting citizens were discussed, and that there was an exchange of views and ideas on the role the Center can play.
As she noted, the discussion focused specifically on “how the Center can become even more beneficial and make a meaningful contribution to citizens.”
