DIKO on the murder of Tassos Isaac: Those responsible for the crime must be brought to justice

Impunity “cannot be equated with an implied statute of limitations”

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the brutal murder of Tassos Isaac in the Deryneia buffer zone.

On the occasion of this somber anniversary, the DIKO party stated in a press release that “on August 11, 1996, Tassos Isaac, unarmed, was beaten to death by Turkish nationalists of the ‘Grey Wolves’ and agents of the occupation regime during an anti-occupation demonstration. The European Court of Human Rights ruled against Turkey for violating the right to life and for failing to effectively investigate the crime. “Despite the international arrest warrants, the suspects unfortunately remain at large.”

Impunity, notes DIKO, “cannot be turned into a tacit statute of limitations. Nor can a court ruling remain a dead letter.”

“The Democratic Party supports every effort made to bring those responsible to justice and hold them accountable,” the statement emphasizes, adding that “Tassos Isaac did not come to terms with the occupation; he did not accept the barbed wire of the occupation as the border of his homeland. His sacrifice is a constant call to responsibility and struggle.”

“We honor his sacred and heroic memory by continuing the effort for the liberation and reunification of Cyprus, without occupying forces or foreign guarantees, with full respect for the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus and the human rights of the entire Cypriot people. May his memory live on forever,” DIKO concludes in its statement.
