The “eyes” of Cyprus’s state and political leadership are fixed on New York, as President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides announced behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts on the sidelines of the annual United Nations General Assembly that could very well “spark” new developments in the effort to resume talks on a solution to the Cyprus problem.
Nikos Christodoulides’ meeting with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on the Cyprus Issue, María Ángela Olguín, is considered crucial; the meeting is “scheduled” for today at 6:00 p.m. New York time. Earlier, the President of the Republic will meet with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Andrew Burnham.

Diplomatic sources told Alpha Cyprus that António Guterres himself appears to be placing particular importance on the meeting he will have with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who will address the UN General Assembly and is expected to discuss the Cyprus issue. In fact, in previous years, Mr. Erdoğan had outlined his desire for a two-state solution and presented the framework of his plans for resolving the issue.
The President of the Republic will meet with the UN Secretary-General tomorrow afternoon, in a meeting expected to clarify the situation regarding efforts to resume talks, which seem to suggest that they “must be salvaged” rather than “broken off.”
In the occupied territories, however, politicians and voters are “dancing” to the rhythm of the election campaign, with the most recent announcement that “Cyprus Turkish Airlines”—which used to operate flights only to Turkey and shut down 16 years ago—is resuming operations.
