"The most important thing is for Turkey to return to the negotiating table and realign itself with the UN framework," said Government Spokesperson Mr. Konstantinos Letympiotis today.

Speaking to reporters after the memorial service for the heroes of the Letymbou community, and when asked to comment on remarks made in an interview by the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy on the Cyprus issue, Ms. María Ángela Olguín, that the peace effort rests with the two leaders without involving Turkey, the Spokesperson said that “the UN Secretary-General himself, during a visit that was not only very important but historic—both following his meeting with the President of the Republic and after his meeting with Mr. Erciyaman, and in his statements before departing Cyprus, emphasized the role that the guarantor powers have to play in this effort.

It is clear that for the UN Secretary-General’s commitment to translate into tangible progress and the resumption of negotiations, what is needed is genuine political will on the part of all parties. Above all, however—and this has been well known for many decades—occupying Turkey, which, unfortunately, operates outside the framework established by UN Security Council resolutions, from which the terms of reference for the UN Secretary-General derive.

We will continue this effort, exactly as the UN Secretary-General himself envisioned it, in close coordination and cooperation with his personal envoy.

On August 26, the President of the Republic will meet with Mr. Erchurman, during which they will have the opportunity to discuss some of the elements related to confidence-building measures. The proposal submitted by the Secretary-General regarding crossing points is well known; President Christodoulides had already accepted it during the UN Secretary-General’s visit. We look forward to sincere political will; we look forward to the same constructive attitude from the other side so that progress can be made there as well.

What is most urgent, what is of the utmost importance, is for Turkey to return to the negotiating table and realign itself with the UN framework.”
