Newspapers in the occupied territories are calling it a historic step

Dialog features the Cyprus issue as its main front-page story and, under the headline “The Last Tango,” reports that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, is coming to discuss the resumption of talks with the two leaders, while other newspapers are also covering the story.

It reports that the Secretary-General will arrive on July 27, meet with the leaders separately, and then meet with them together. According to Dialog, before arriving on the island, Guterres will also be in contact with the leaders of the guarantor countries with the aim of resuming talks.

The report notes that the Secretary-General is coming with both Deputy Secretaries-General Di Carlo and Lacroix, a “strong showing” —as Dialogue writes—and political observers note that this indicates Mr. Guterres would like to conclude his term on a high note. And for that to happen in Cyprus.

Meanwhile, Yeni Douzen, citing diplomatic sources in Belgium, reports that the meetings between the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus and the President of the European Council, Ursula von der Leyen, and the Special Representative, Raffaele Fitto, in Brussels have been finalized for July 21–22. Following these meetings, Ms. Olgin will visit Cyprus.

She recalls that during the first half of June, Ms. Olgin visited Cyprus and met separately twice with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman and Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Christodoulides. During that visit, she announced preparations for an expanded conference that would include the guarantor states of the Republic of Cyprus. After concluding her meetings in Cyprus, the Colombian diplomat, who traveled to New York to brief Secretary-General Guterres on her meetings with Cypriot leaders, will meet with EU officials in Brussels next week, who have expressed their active involvement in the process.

The report also notes that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently appointed Vice President Raffaele Fitto as the new SpecialSpecial Representative for Cyprus. Political circles have interpreted this appointment as a sign that the process has made significant progress behind closed doors, the article states.

It also refers to von der Leyen’s social media post stating that the EU is fully engaged in the process, saying that it is “ready to do everything it can to support efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue within the framework of the UN and in accordance with the EU’s principles, values, and legislation.”

The other Turkish Cypriot newspapers report on the UN Secretary-General’s visit, which they consider a historic step, while Avrupa notes that it is taking place four months before the end of his term.
