Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou responds to Makarios Drousiotis’s “criticism.”
In a post, Mr. Ioannou states that “the Ministry of the Interior is not targeting anyone and does not seek to destroy anyone.”
He added, “It came to the attention of the Ministry that a fundraising campaign is underway, which, at first glance, was deemed to fall under the provisions of the legislation governing fundraisers. The police were duly asked to investigate the matter. If the investigation reveals that it does not fall under the provisions of that specific legislation, no one will be prosecuted or charged.”
Earlier, in an initial response to the Ministry of the Interior’s letter to the police regarding his online fundraising campaign, Mr. Drousiotis had stated that “they’re coming after me with the criminal code in hand.”
At the same time, he spoke of hostility on the part of the government.
“It is now confirmed that this government is hounding me with the criminal code in hand and seeking to destroy me by any means necessary. They want to put me on trial without lawyers and without scientific support. This hostility means something…”
According to Mr. Drousiotis “I did not organize any charity fundraiser, and my case does not fall under the scope of the Law on Fundraisers,” a point that was confirmed, as he notes, by the legal counsel he secured.
