A maritime traffic monitoring system (known internationally as the Vessel Traffic Service—VTS), which is an integrated system for managing and controlling maritime traffic in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as a new building for the “Coastal Safety and Rescue Company,” were inaugurated in occupied Famagusta in the presence of the Turkish Minister of Transportation, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, and the “Minister of Public Works and Transportation,” Erhan Arikli, on the anniversary of the invasion.
The project was implemented by the Turkish company Havelsan in collaboration with the Turkish General Directorate of Maritime Affairs. As part of this infrastructure, a maritime traffic services center was established in occupied Famagusta, while unmanned surveillance stations were completed in Rizokarpaso, Agios Theodoros Karpasia, and Livera.
In his remarks, Mr. Ouraloglou, who was in the occupied territories for the events marking the dark anniversary of the Turkish invasion, stated that the project aims to ensure the safety of navigation and to “consolidate Turkey’s sovereignty” within the framework of the “Blue Homeland” doctrine.
For his part, Erhan Arikli claimed that the system’s operation is a “response” to those seeking an Eastern Mediterranean “without Turkey.”
