The meeting of the Political Bureau of the Democratic Alarm Party began shortly after 5:00 p.m. at the Pindarou headquarters, focusing on internal party procedures for selecting the party’s candidate for the 2028 presidential election and, more specifically, on setting the dates for the election. The “Tassos Mitsopoulos – Famagusta” hall is packed to capacity, as the 220 members of the Political Bureau, as well as other party members, are in attendance, with the total number of those present estimated at approximately 250.
Three proposals regarding the timing of the internal party procedures are before the assembly. The first is the Executive Bureau’s proposal to submit candidacies on October 13 and hold the elections on November 14.
The second proposal calls for a slight extension, while the third proposes postponing the procedures until early 2027.
A proposal that all organized groups within DISY sign in support of the candidacies of all candidates vying for the party’s nomination for the presidential election was submitted by the chairof the faction, Annita Dimitriou, at the start of the Political Bureau meeting.
At the same time, Anita Dimitriou stated in her opening remarks before the body that she has no objection to the internal party procedures taking place in December 2026, with nominations to be submitted in December 2026 and the election to be held in January 2027, in order to allow sufficient time for those who wish to run for office
The party chair sent a message of unity, emphasizing that our goal is to have a single candidate emerge from the process and to move forward united in this battle.
“We are members of the same team; we have fought battles and will continue to do so,” added Ms. Dimitriou.
While Ms. Dimitriou noted that she is open to holding the elections in December or January, she emphasized that this does not mean they will necessarily take place then.
At the same time, George Pamporidis reaffirmed before the Political Bureau his intention to run as a candidate in the Democratic Alarm party’s internal elections for the presidential nomination.
In his statement, Dimitris Dimitriou proposed extending the party’s primary process to December 13.
Meanwhile, Yiannis Karousos expressed his belief that “we should already have a candidate.”
George Lysandritis proposed postponing the selection process until early 2027, a proposal that was communicated to the Political Bureau via letter, as he is currently abroad.
The meeting of the party’s Political Bureau is taking place in the absence of former party President Averof Neophytou, who, according to reports, is abroad.
