In the UN Secretary-General’s reply to his letter, dated August 28, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman referred to it in a post on Sunday evening, after the “presidency” had announced it. It should be noted that he had done the same with the EU’s response to the same letter, which concerned “the initiatives undertaken by the Greek Cypriot side on issues such as the cancellation of festivals and the Barcelona soccer academy event, as well as the obstruction of our contacts with foreign diplomats.”
According to reports from the occupied territories, the Turkish Cypriot leader lists four points from Mr. Guterres’s response letter dated October 16. First, he argues that the head of the international organization “carefully noted our concerns regarding developments affecting our cultural, athletic, political, and diplomatic activities,” second, “he viewed these initiatives as discouraging and contrary to his calls for initiatives to strengthen mutual trust,” and third, “actions that hinder confidence-building are incompatible with our joint efforts.”
Our goal is to contribute to “creating favorable conditions to ensure the launch of a process toward a lasting solution,” as the Secretary-General has repeatedly emphasized, by implementing new confidence-building measures, added Mr. Erhurman, who believes that actions that hinder confidence-building, as defined by Mr. Guterres, are incompatible with this effort.
The Turkish Cypriot leader maintains that it is significant that the UN Secretary-General shares this view. “I hope that this letter from the Secretary-General will serve as a guide for all those who need and wish to assess the actions that lead to the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot people, contrary to the decisions previously announced by international organizations, and which hinder confidence-building,” he states.
“We will continue to work tirelessly, to engage in diplomacy and dialogue, both to build trust and to achieve a solution, and to ensure that our people are connected to the world,” Mr. Erhurman concluded in his post.
