Ankara is conducting “preparedness exercises” ahead of the issuance of a NAVTEX regarding the resumption of surveys for the Cyprus-Crete power interconnection, as a NAVTEX issued this morning declares the Heraklion Station to be unauthorized and arbitrarily reissues a notice regarding the conduct of the multinational exercise “EUNOMIA” in an area south of Kastellorizo.
The Heraklion Station had issued a NAVTEX late yesterday regarding the conduct of the multinational live-fire exercise “EUNOMIA,” on October 19, in an area south of Kastellorizo, through which the research vessel Abeille Marengo is also expected to pass, once the procedure is completed and the relevant NAVTEX is issued.
The area designated for the EUNOMIA 2026 exercise
Today, Turkey, through its Antalya Station, claims that this area falls under its jurisdiction and is reissuing the NAVTEX for the exercise, using the coordinates that had already been announced.
The NAVTEX issued by Turkey
In this way, Turkey seeks to reiterate and highlight its claim to exercise authority to issue NAVTEX messages throughout the entire area corresponding to the “Blue Homeland”. At the same time, it is sending an indirect message that any activity—whether an exercise or research—in this area will require the issuance of the relevant NAVTEX by Turkey itself.
