The new U.S. Ambassador, John Breslow, who is expected to present his credentials to President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides in the coming days.
The U.S. Embassy in Cyprus announced John Breslow’s arrival in a post on Platform X, noting that the new Ambassador looks forward to presenting his credentials to President Christodoulides in the coming days.
Mr. Breslow, a businessman and former Nebraska State Auditor, was appointed by U.S. President Donald Trump, and his nomination was confirmed by the Senate on August 7, 2026. He is the first politically appointed, non-career diplomat to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus.
Born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, Breslow spent most of his professional career in the private sector as the owner and chairman of the board of Linweld, an industrial gas and welding equipment company. He also served as Nebraska’s state auditor from 1991 to 1999, and in 1998 he unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for governor of the state.
During his hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in April, Breslow described the U.S.-Cyprus relationship as a “lasting friendship” based on cooperation and a commitment to peace, noting that bilateral relations are grounded in a shared vision for stability and prosperity in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean. He referred to the deepening of cooperation in the security sector, particularly following the signing, in December 2018, the Declaration of Intent on bilateral cooperation in the security sector and the enactment of the law on the Security and Energy Partnership in the Eastern Mediterranean in 2019.
The new Ambassador also emphasized Cyprus’s strategic importance, given its location at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, while noting the two countries’ cooperation in the areas of security and education.
He said that his top priority would be the safety of American citizens in Cyprus, acknowledging the Republic of Cyprus’s role in supporting operations to evacuate American citizens from crisis zones in recent years.
Breslow also set as a goal the further strengthening of trade and investment relations, noting that the close cooperation between the two countries has bolstered the confidence of U.S. companies to establish or expand their operations in Cyprus.
Regarding the Cyprus issue, he pledged to continue supporting a Cypriot-led effort, facilitated by the United Nations, to reunify Cyprus on the basis of a bizonal, bi-communal federation with political equality for all Cypriots, in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
